First, here’s the clip if you haven’t seen the fight:

Brock Lesnar versus Frank Mir: UFC 81

This Ultimate Fighting Competition fight had a huge build-up as it featured the UFC debut of Brock Lesnar, a former World Wrestling Entertainment superstar going up against Frank Mir, a former UFC champion and one of the best in history.

A lot of people thought that Lesnar would be unable to compete in the UFC given his lack of real fighting experience, but they seem to forget that he was an NCAA wrestling champion and is a fantastic athlete. The guy does have fighting experience, even if it’s not in the UFC or MMA fighting.

Watch the fight, and then we see a couple of things to notice.

1. An inexperienced fighter or athlete can have success even over a skilled opponent through pure physical ability, aggression, and determination. Frank Mir is by all accounts a far superior fighter from a skill standpoint and no physical slouch, either. Lesnar was bigger, stronger, and surprisingly quick and had Mir in a lot of trouble. There was a very good chance that Lesnar could have won that bout by power and speed alone. Right from the get-go Mir looked overwhelmed, which isn’t a common sight to see from him.

This is a great cue for you young athletes out there to keep in mind that you can train yourself to success. Don’t take no for an answer and just throw it out there. My old football coach used to say “even if you make a mistake, do it at 100 miles per hour and you’ll be surprised at what might happen”. Good advice.

2. On the other side of the coin you have a wily veteran being physically overwhelmed by an aggressive but inexperienced opponent. Quite frankly, Mir was getting his ass whooped. Despite that he was able to keep his wits about him and just wait for a good opening. He saw it and took the available leg. He also knew that this type of leg lock was probably going to be available since Lesnar is big and inexperienced. Mir knew that even if he was being physically handled he just had to survive long enough for Lesnar to mess up, which he did.

This teaches us to look at athletics from a thinking point of view. Use some strategy and pay attention. Even when things aren’t going your way it’s important to persevere and wait for the opening that presents itself.

It’s great to see a fight where both athletes do some of the right things. Even though the match itself ended up being pretty short it was obviously a battle right from the beginning. Both fighters looked like they had prepared to the best of their ability and were out there giving it everything they had.
